Why SEBO Costs More Than a $200 Vacuum (And When It's Worth It)

Let's address the elephant in the room: a SEBO Felix costs $799. You can walk into any big-box store and walk out with a vacuum for $200. So what's the deal? Is SEBO really four times better?

Honest answer: it depends on how you count. Let me show you the math we walk customers through at the counter, and then you decide.

What the $200 Vacuum Really Costs

A $200 vacuum isn't a $200 vacuum. It's a $200 vacuum every two to three years.

The average cheap upright or stick vacuum lasts 2–3 years of regular household use before the motor burns out, the plastic housing cracks, the battery won't hold a charge (cordless), or it just stops picking up like it used to. Then you buy another one. And another one.

Over 15 years, that's 5–7 vacuums at $200 each: $1,000 to $1,400. Plus the Saturday afternoons spent researching replacements, plus the week you went without a vacuum while the old one sat dead in the closet.

A SEBO Felix at $799, maintained with regular bag changes, routinely runs 15–20 years. We've got customers bringing in SEBOs from the early 2000s for their first real service. Do the per-year math:

  • $200 vacuum: ~$67–$100/year (replacing every 2–3 years)
  • SEBO Felix at $799: ~$40–$53/year (over 15–20 years)

The "expensive" vacuum is cheaper. It's just cheaper on a timeline most people don't calculate at the checkout counter.

What You're Actually Paying For

Build quality. SEBOs are engineered in Germany and built to commercial standards. Thick ABS housings, metal brush rollers, motors designed for continuous duty. When a $200 vacuum's motor dies, the machine is trash — parts aren't available and no shop will touch it. When a SEBO needs work in year 12, we order the part and fix it. That's a fundamentally different product philosophy.

The 10/10/7 warranty. Register your SEBO and you get 10 years on the motor, 10 years on non-wear parts, and 7 years on labor. Read that again. No $200 vacuum offers anything close, because no $200 vacuum is expected to survive that long.

Sealed bagged filtration. This is the one that matters most for a lot of our customers. SEBO's S-class filtration is a sealed system — dust goes into the bag and stays there. Bagless machines, even expensive ones, release a puff of fine dust every time you empty the bin. If anyone in your house has allergies or asthma, this isn't a luxury feature. It's the whole point.

And the bags? A pack of SEBO bags costs less per year than the filters you'd replace on a bagless machine. The "bags are expensive" argument doesn't survive contact with actual numbers.

What customers tell us. The most common thing we hear from someone six months after buying a SEBO isn't about suction or features. It's "I can't believe how much dust was in my carpet." That's the sealed system doing what a leaky bagless bin never could — actually removing dirt from your home instead of redistributing it. The second most common thing? "I wish I'd done this years ago." We hear that one a lot.

Serviceability. We service what we sell. Belts, bags, brush rollers, filters — all in stock, all replaceable, for decades. Try finding a replacement battery for a five-year-old cordless stick vac. We'll wait.

When a $200 Vacuum Is Fine

Honesty matters, so here's the other side: not everyone needs a SEBO.

  • Dorm room or first apartment? A $200 vacuum is fine. You're not there long enough for durability to matter.
  • Garage or workshop? Buy the cheap one. It's going to eat drywall dust and regret.
  • You genuinely replace vacuums without thinking twice? Some people just don't keep appliances long. That's okay.

We're not here to shame anyone's budget. A cheap vacuum that gets used beats an expensive one that doesn't.

When SEBO Is Worth It

  • You own your home and plan to stay. The per-year math only works if you're in it for the long haul.
  • Allergies or asthma in the household. Sealed filtration is a health upgrade, not a luxury.
  • Pets. Pet hair destroys cheap vacuums. SEBOs eat it for breakfast, for fifteen years.
  • You're tired of buying vacuums. If you've replaced two cheap machines in five years, you've already spent SEBO money. You just don't have a SEBO to show for it.

The Real Question

It's not "is SEBO four times better than a $200 vacuum." It's "do you want to buy one vacuum or six?"
