It's the first question every vacuum buyer asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on your house, not on which one is "better." After 40+ years of selling and repairing both, here's how I help customers decide.
Buy an upright if…
- Most of your home is carpet. Uprights are carpet machines — the power head is right under your hands, and you cover big carpeted rooms fast.
- You want simple. One machine, grab and go, no hose to drag. Push forward, pull back, done.
- Storage is tight. An upright parks in a closet corner.
Our pick: the SEBO Felix ($799) — German-made, ET-1 power head, parquet brush for the bare floors, and it converts to a canister-style cleaner for stairs. The Dart ($649) gets you the same SEBO durability for less if your needs are straightforward.
Buy a canister if…
- You have lots of bare floors. A canister with a parquet brush glides over hardwood, tile, and laminate in a way no upright can match.
- You have stairs. Carrying a lightweight canister body while the hose does the work beats wrestling an upright on steps.
- You want versatility. The hose and tools are always ready — upholstery, blinds, baseboards, car interiors, no attachments to hunt down.
- You have pets. Canisters detail better: under furniture, along edges, into the crevices where pet hair hides.
Our picks: the SEBO K3 ($949) for a compact, easy-to-carry canister, or the E3 ($1,149) for the full-size flagship with the biggest bag and the smoothest steering.
The tiebreakers
Allergies? Either works if it's a sealed S-Class HEPA system — which every SEBO is. The deciding factor is your floors, not your sinuses.
Bad back or heavy house? Canister. The weight stays on the floor; your arm just guides the wand.
One vacuum for everything? The Felix is the closest thing to both: an upright that goes flat to the floor and converts for stairs and above-floor cleaning.
Still not sure?
Take our 60-second quiz and get a personal recommendation — or just come to the store. Trying an upright and a canister side by side on real carpet and hardwood answers the question in about two minutes.
