I fix vacuums for a living. So when I tell you that most cleaning companies are burning money on their equipment, it's not a sales pitch — it's what I see on my repair bench every week.
Here's the pattern. A cleaning company buys five or six vacuums from a big box store. They're cheap — $150, maybe $200 each. Six months later, two of them are in my shop. The brush rolls are shot, the filters were never available as replacements, and a part that should cost $12 doesn't exist because the manufacturer never made it. The owner buys two more cheap ones. A year later, repeat.
Run the math on that. Six cheap vacuums at $175 is $1,050. Replacing half of them every year is another $500 to $600 annually, forever. In three years, you've spent over $2,500 and you've never once had six working vacuums at the same time. Your crews are working with dead equipment, which means worse results, which means unhappy clients.
Now run the other math. A commercial-grade machine — a Riccar or SEBO built for daily professional use — costs more up front. But it's serviceable. When a belt wears out, it's a $12 part and twenty minutes in my shop. When a brush roll needs replacing, it exists and I have it. These machines are designed to be maintained, not replaced. Over five years, the total cost is lower, and the difference in cleaning quality isn't close.
Downtime is the hidden cost nobody calculates. When a crew shows up to a client's office and the vacuum doesn't work, that's not an equipment problem — it's a reputation problem. Commercial work runs on reliability. A machine with a service plan behind it doesn't leave you stranded. A disposable from a big box store does, usually at the worst time.
This is what a local dealer actually gives you:
- Machines chosen for commercial duty, not for looking good on a shelf.
- A service counter ten minutes away when something needs attention — not a 1-800 number and a shipping label.
- Parts in stock for the machines we sell. Belts, bags, brush rolls, filters.
- Someone who knows your account and your equipment when you call.
- Loaners or fast turnaround so your crews aren't waiting.
The big box store gives you a receipt. That's the entire relationship.
I've been supplying and servicing commercial accounts around St. Louis since 1983. Offices, churches, rental properties, cleaning companies running multiple crews. The ones who switched to serviceable machines stopped thinking about vacuums as a recurring expense and started thinking of them as equipment — which is what they are when they're built right.
If you run a cleaning company and you're tired of the buy-break-replace cycle, call me. We'll talk about what your crews actually need — how many machines, what kind of accounts you're servicing, what your downtime is costing you. I'll put together something that makes sense for your operation, with service behind it.
One more thing worth saying. Your clients judge your work by the results, and results come from equipment that works every single time. A crew with a reliable machine cleans faster, does better work, and keeps the account. A crew fighting a dying vacuum is slower and the client can tell. The equipment decision isn't overhead — it's the quality of what you sell. Buy it once, maintain it, and put the replacement money back in your pocket.
